Marvolo Gaunt was the last male head of the Gaunt family, a very ancient Wizarding line noted for a vein of instability and violence that flourished through generations of marrying their own cousins. By the time of Marvolo, the family gold had been squandered, leaving him in squalor and poverty. He lived in a filthy, dilapidated cottage in Little Hangleton, a hovel with mossy walls, a roof missing many tiles, and nettles growing up to the windows. Despite his destitution, Marvolo possessed a fantastic amount of arrogance and pride, treasuring two family heirlooms: a heavy gold locket bearing the mark of Salazar Slytherin, and an ugly gold-and-black-stoned ring engraved with the Peverell coat of arms. He was a man of a very nasty temper, with a great liking for grandeur he could no longer afford.

Marvolo lived with his two children, Morfin and Merope, in their squalid home. When Bob Ogden of the Ministry of Magic arrived to summon Morfin for attacking a Muggle with magic, Marvolo's response was aggressive and defiant.
